The Hogue family would not have survived for long in New France without Jeanne Theodore. Not only does she play a strong role in the finances of the family, but she bears two sons that will help produce 9 more sons. In total, Jeanne Theodore has 9 children of her own who go on to have a total of 54 children, most of whom have children of their own, though we do not know for sure who or how many.
She marries at age 13 and has her first child (Marie Anne Therese, for whom not much is known) 2 years later at age 15. Pierre, born 1648, is 28 at the time of marriage.
After bearing seven children with Pierre, Jeanne has one son with another man — Jacques Amelot Sanpeur — in 1694. This creates a half-sibling relationship with the Sanpeur family. As noted below, she and Pierre appear to reconcile (or Pierre never knew of this relationship) and Jeanne has two more girls with Pierre in 1703 and 1705.

- Michel Theodore dit Gilles — “Dit” names were sometimes attributed and used by men along with their surnames to distinguish themselves from their father and brothers and for military identification purposes. It is unknown why 2.1 Pierre chose to use “St. Malo.” Perhaps it was a region or city he was familiar with. Pierre immigrates to Nouvelle France about 1688.
- Date of Birth — “Jette” book page 570 and “AFGS” “PRDH” database indicates 2.1 Pierre’s age of 33 at a census taken in 1681. This same census shows his second wife Jeanne to be 18 years old. If her date of birth is correct, she would have been 13 when she “marries” Pierre. Her first child is born in 1680.
- Additional partner Jacques Amelot Sanpeur — It appears that a child was born to Jacques Amelot Sanpeur and Jeanne Theodore in 1694, after seven children with Pierre and before two more. Did they reconcile? See page for 3.10 Francois Amelot for more information.
- Typically, the location of Canada is shown for familiarity purposes. At this time in Canadian history, it would have been known as “Nouvelle France” (New France).
