About

Pierre dit St. Malo is father to 9 children with Jeanne Theodore. As far as we know right now, Pierre is the only son of his father, 1.0 Jean Hogue the first Hogue we could find. If it were not for Pierre and especially Jeanne, the rest of the family would not be here (at least not in the same way).

Born in France in the same town as his father, 2.1 Pierre moves to Nouvelle France (territories that became Canada) around 1672. Read (Generation 11.32) Marcel’s Story of Pierre for more.

Pierre lives to be in his seventies, which is unusual for the time period. There is data that goes back to the early 1800s, indicating that the average life span in France was 40 years. Canada has similar data that starts in the early 1800s.

Notes

  • dit St. Malo — “Dit” names were sometimes attributed and used by men along with their surnames to distinguish themselves from their father and brothers and for military identification purposes. It is unknown why Pierre chose to use “St. Malo.” Perhaps it was a region or city he was familiar with. 2.1 Pierre immigrates to Nouvelle France about 1688.
  • Jeanne Theodore — “Jette” book page 570 and “AFGS” “PRDH” database indicates Pierre’s age of 33 at a census taken in 1681. This same census shows his second wife Jeanne to be 18 years old. If her date of birth is correct, she would have been 13 when she marries Pierre. Her first child is born in 1678, [3.3] Marie Anne Therese Hogue, but we are unclear if this is correct and if the child survives into adulthood.
  • Typically, the location of Canada is shown for familiarity purposes. At this time in Canadian history, it would have been known as “Nouvelle France” (New France). New France became the British Province of Quebec in 1763 after France ceded it in the Treaty of Paris at the end of the Seven Years’ War.
