About

Marie Madeline only lived to be 22 years old but bore two sons when she was 19. As an indigenous person, she was baptized at age 18, married a few months later, and had her first child a year later. Unfortunately, her first born only lived seven years and her second to a similar age of 22.

Around this time, newcomers from France were few and those that became Christian largely did so of their free will. Later, as new France became more populous, assimilation with European cultures was not so simple.

Notes

  • AFGS “Jette” book #009 has Marie Nachita as an “Amerindienne du pays des Puteotamitres” (now referred to as First Nation people by Canadian government), but is baptized in 1672 at 16 years old (if she had not been baptized, the Church would have considered children from this marriage illegitimate). The same document puts her at 22 years old at the time of her death in 1676. If this is correct, she would have been born in 1654. Some reference material has her as “Marie Madeleine Catherine Nachita.” Some sources show 2.1 Pierre’s date of marriage to “Catherine Nachita” as 27 November, 1673.
  • Typically, the location of Canada is shown for familiarity purposes. At this time in Canadian history, it would have been known as “Nouvelle France” (New France). New France became the British Province of Quebec in 1763 after France ceded it in the Treaty of Paris at the end of the Seven Years’ War.
