About

It would appear that Jeanne Theodore had “an affair” with Jacques, with the result of a (illegitimate?) son, Francois. This is from the “Bibliotheque et Archives nationals du Quebec” database in Montreal, as well as the “AFGS” “PRDH” database. Jeanne has seven children with Pierre Hogue before Francois and will later have two more children with Pierre after Francois. Did Pierre and Jeanne reconcile? Was Pierre aware? Pierre was not without his own faults, of course, and he was much older than Jeanne when they wed. This, plus financial problems, could have led to this incident. (See “A Little Bit of History” for background information.) We may never know what took place or why it occurred. “AFGS” “PRDH” database document #12878 shows [2.1] Pierre Hogue and Jeanne Theodore attending the marriage of Marie-Joseph(t)e Hogue and Pierre Cadieux in 1722, 28 years after Francois’s birth, perhaps indicating Pierre and Jeanne stayed together.

Notes

  • Marie Catherine Lorrain – Also, in some of the source material, Marie Catherine Lorrain (Laurin) above is shown as wife to 3.7 Francois, but (Generation 11.32) Marcel believes that may be incorrect. If it were, 3.7 Francois would be marrying Marie Angelique Coiteux (which would make her his second spouse) while Marie Catherine is still alive (she dies in 1748) — an unlikely event. For this reason, (Generation 11.32) Marcel believes that Marie Catherine belongs with this 3.10 Francois above.
  • Typically, the location of Canada is shown for familiarity purposes. At this time in Canadian history, it would have been known as “Nouvelle France” (New France). See (Generation 11.32) Marcel’s “Introduction” and “Story of Pierre” for additional information. New France became the British Province of Quebec in 1763 after France ceded it in the Treaty of Paris at the end of the Seven Years’ War.
