About

Francois is the youngest child of four (that we know of) born to Michel Hogue and Marguerite Ballard. His birth date is a source of potential confusion given his age of marriage to what might have been a first wife, though we believe this marriage did not take place. Still, if his birth date stands, and marriage dates are correct, he would have been 17 when he married a 15-year-old Marie Lemere in 1863.

We are used to seeing marriages at these young ages in previous generations, and this might have still been common in the late 1800s, but it feels as though the marriage date is incorrect. The first born, Adelard, comes fives years later in 1868 which makes Francois 23 and Marie 19 or 20. Francois and Marie have eight or nine children together over a period of about 25 years.

Between birth and marriage, a young Francois and Marie Lemere also move to Woonsocket, Rhode Island, from St. Pierre de Sorel, Richelieu County, Quebec. Perhaps this is why the young couple did not have children for five years. Either way, this move, presumably to the find work as a stonemason and in the building trades in New England, is why subsequent generations of the Hogues locate around northern Rhode Island and bordering Massachusetts towns.

Notes

  • Birth year — If his year of birth is correct, and the years of his marriages are correct, he would be 13 years of age at his first marriage, and 17 at his second. This makes his year of birth uncertain. However, “AFGS” book of “Franco-American Burials” indicates that he is 57 years of age at the time of his death. Perhaps his dates of marriage are incorrect, but his marriage in 1863 is shown in most reference materials.
  • Marie Helenburgh — Information for the first marriage is taken from Ilene Trainor email dated 8 March, 2011 and she quotes her source as “Drouin Blue Book.” However, (Generation 11.32) Marcel does not believe that this marriage occurs for this (Gen. # 8.12) Francois. Some source material has father and mother for children Gen. #9.18 and #9.19 as “Francois Xavier Hogue” (possibly a separate Hogue line) and “M. Ellenburgh,” hence the confusion.
  • Lemere vs. Lamere - Marie’s surname has been shown with different spellings. “Lemere” is perhaps the “Canadian” spelling, and “Lamere” is probably the “Americanized” version. Angelfire.com uses the “Lamere” spelling; however, Marie’s headstone is shown as “Lemaire” — a third spelling. She dies at 85 years of age.
  • J. Gabriel & J. Narcisse are sometimes listed in this lineage as two separate individuals. On some reference material, there is a conflict with their respective dates of birth. “J. Gabriel” is shown with date of birth as “15 September, 1891”, and “J. Narcisse” is shown with date of birth as “15 December, 1891”. “AFGS” “Franco-American Burials” register (page 119) indicates “J. Gabriel” and “J. Narcisse” as one person named “Joseph Narcisse Gabriel Hogue.” “AFGS” “Blackstone Valley Cemetery” database shows “Gabriel” as being born 5 December, 1891 and with death on 26 December, 1891 (ref. #65190).
